Historic towns and shopping

Many a relaxing hour can be spent in Parthenay (12 minutes) and Bressuire (25 minutes) exploring the medieval streets and castle ramparts. a little further away is the capital city of the Deux Sevres Niort (45 minutes) with its shopping and fine dinning. Visit the dungeon or the large indoor market. Poitiers (1 hr) with many fine historic buildings and the towns and chateaux of the Loire valley are only 1-2 hours away.

Local activities

At Secondigny (5 min and 5 km) there  is a beautiful lake, Les Effres with a restaurant and bar open air swimming pool ( summer holiday afternoons only) cycle and pedalo hire and newly refurbished play area with small zip wire, lovely for a picnic after visiting the supermarket.

There is a large swimming pool in Parthenay.

Cycling and walking

The area is great for walking and Cycling there are many quiet undulating roads, circular paths, off road tracks and access to long distance foot path such as the pilgrim route to Santiargo de Compostela or walk on an old Roman road. We have found many fine walks by just stepping out of the door of the gite with a map. Walking or cycling is a great way of getting a feel of this gem of traditional rural France.

Fishing and water sports

Our gite is a perfect base for fishermen as there are many lakes and rivers to fish in the area.

Fishing is available at Lac Effres in Secondigny. 

The largest fishing area is at Centre Pescalis, Moncoutant, an international nature and angling centre (40 Minutes ) around 100 hectares of managed lakes set amongst woodland, fields and with separate fishing areas for children. There is also a freshwater aquarium.

You can visit the lake at Moncontour to swim and canoe and water ski. 

Golf

If golf is your sport there are many fine golf courses less than an hour away. Golf du Petit Chene, Mazières en Gâtine,Chateau des Forges and Chateau du Grand Ormeau, Niort

Activities a little further away 

The world famous Futuroscope at Poitiers and the spectacular Puy de Fou are about an hour away these are both well worth a visit or even two to be able to see all the attractions that are on offer. To the south west of the region there is the Marais Poitevin a maze of water ways and canals  and delightful villages, in an area reclaimed from the sea. The area can be enjoyed on foot, by cycle and by boat (cycles and boats can be hired at various embarkation points) and if you just want to chill there are lovely resultants.

The Vendee coast is a little over an hour away with the historic La Rochelle with a large choice of restaurants on the front. For another trip back to the past the chateaux of the Loire are easily reached.
